Our religious Congregation, the Sisters of St. Francis of the Martyr St. George, was founded in 1869 by Mother M. Anselma Bopp, in Thuine, Germany.

Mother M. Anselma's Maxims

Touched by the love of Christ Crucified and inspired by the joyful witness of St. Francis of Assisi, Mother M. Anselma adopted the Rule of the Third Order Regular of St. Francis, and therefore, joyful simplicity marks the lives of her spiritual daughters.

St. Francis of Assisi

“May the loving Lord direct everything according to His Will” was the foundation on which she built her life and our Congregation.

     Brief history of our Congregation.

From the first small convent in Thuine, a world-wide Congregation has developed.  Mother M. Anselma sought the Will of God in the many and varied works and needs of the time.  It is the special mission of the Sisters of our Congregation to be simply ready in obedience to God’s call.  In the spirit of true, faith-filled obedience to the Church, our Sisters work among children, youth, the aged, the sick, the poor, and the needy of every condition.

Our Congregation now spans several continents.  The Thuine convent became the Motherhouse for many daughterhouses.

Since November of 1869 our Congregation has spread throughout Germany (Province St. Francis); to the Netherlands in 1875 (Province St. Anthony); to Japan in 1920 (Province St. Mary); to the United States in 1923 (Province St. Elizabeth); to Indonesia in 1932 (Province St. Joseph);  to Tanzania, Africa in 1960 (Region St. Clare); to Northwestern Brazil in 1972 (Region of the Sacred Heart); to Albania in 2000, and to Assisi in 2005.
